Raanjhanaa - Script Analysis

Raanjhanaa :

Love + Male Ego +Female Ego + Politics = Raanjhanaa

This is a complete new story, because of….
1. There is no references for this movie..
2. While watching a movie , there is no other film in audience mind...
3. Scenes, Characters , turns are not expected by audience in this love story ...
   And so, Audience get thrilled.
4. Cinema twists ,turns are logical..

If cinema is larger than life ..that will be going to be classic block buster....
In cinema script ,if we insert the ----Peaks of love (Ghajini ,D.D.L .J)
                                   ----Peaks of sorrows (Dev-D, Devdas ,Mughal-E-Azam )
-----peaks of emotions (Taare Zameen Par )
-----Peaks of Friendship (3 Idiots ,Khurbani ,Sholay )
Worked out and are successful on the screen ......

Story points :

7.Climax Voice over :
This Voice over gives the more feel and depth of the overall story of main character Kundan..

New Scenes :

1.Slapping scenes lead to love..
2.Kundan’s mugging up of greeting card love letter...
3.Kundan’s dance for old songs. ..
4.Kundan explaining love story by movements to Zoya --Recollecting the old story..
5.Zoya Wedding crashing scene played by Kundan, his friends
6.Whenever Kundan and Zoya hug, the film on screen turns - there is correlation between the Interval and Climax scene..
7.Climax :Voice over of kundan touches the heart…

Script Points :

1.Story must revolve between the main characters. Only then we get the feel of the Characters.
Kundan , Zoya , Akram ...these are the main characters ...
Entire story revolves around the love story of Kundan’s and Zoya’s.
( Too much characters spoil the screen time  and audience don’t have memory to remember never ending characters ...)

2.Introduce the Hero before the Romantic rival.
Readers and Audiences instinctively identify with the first character who appears on the screen...
As per screen play "Ranjhanaa" opens with Kundan in ambulance and enters hospital.
Film starts with the voice-over of Kundan.

3.Introduce the main characters relations and friends ...
Next we get to know the childhood of Kundan with all characters ...(Funding in the name of the god )

4.Show the first meeting between the hero and heroine ...
In the next  scene heroine introduced with her religion...
With the 2,3 montage shots film directly opens at 10th class age...

5.Identifying youth with Funny : Romantic scenes
Here onwards, the active hero Kundan starts love journey with Zoya .
Every love story always starts with fun or quarrel element.
Here Zoya starts slapping kundan that leads to love ...

6.Main character and his/her love journey must be continued hilarious otherwise audience feel bore....
The slapping scenes are fun element. Kundan keeps his religion a secret and gains Zoya’s heart.
Here, director takes an advantage of that secret and starts his next scene.

7.Big ups and downs is to give required depth to the movie depth and to make the audience feel for the characters and to make audience understand that they have been on a long and worthwhile emotional journey.
In kundan’s life , we see more love emotions ,worse situations , big ups in his political stint and finally, he dies.
But that emotional journey felt by the audience is injected at climax voiceover of Kundan...

8.Must maintain the variation between first half and second half...
In the first half , we see the hilarious , light emotional love journey of Kundan and Zoya.
But in second half, we see lot of emotional scenes between Kundan and Zoya.
Politics played a vital role in the life of Kundan.

9.The whole enjoyment of watching any type of movie is watching a sympathetic lead character getting themselves in to big trouble...
In this movie Kundan faces so many troubles with his love and lover Zoya. Many times he gets to close Zoya and departs from her. After Interval point, Kundan becomes Villain in the eyes of Zoya.
But Kundan behaves like a repented lover and he overcomes every trouble that come across him.
Finally when Kundan dies, he gains sympathy from audience.

10.Main character graph must be increased..
Observe the Kundan character graph we will notice that point ...

11.Give more and more emotions /funny/Action/thrill than audience expected...
Now a days, Every viewer is a director ,Hence film writer /Director always think about audience.
Then the best output comes ,which is not expected by the audience.

12.1st  half setups ------------------> play role in 2nd half
we see Zoya's emotional love for Akram in the first half. Here Zoya starts loving Akram and Akram reciprocates his love for her.
This makes Kundan to turn into a negative character and reveals truth about  Akram’s secret at the wedding. (Akram is not Muslim ..his name is Jagjeet singh ). After death of Akram , Kundan becomes normal. But Now Zoya is waiting to take revenge on Kundan. These are some of the conflicts that the characters face in this ego based love story.

13.You must find ways to reveal your character's conflicts visually ...
Kundan’s desire mainly is to gain love of Zoya.
Zoya’s desire is to marry Akram by hook or cook.
In these two desires , Zoya’s desire fails in the first half due to male ego of Kundan. That we can see with few gripping scenes like scooter scene and cylinder lifting scene.
Here conflict in Zoya’s character is created and Kundan becomes a negative person in the eyes of Zoya.
That conflict visually narrated by Hospital scene--Joya spitting on Kundan.
Later on, Zoya doesnot talk to Kundan in the second half.
Joya’s conflict turns into negative shade slowly and she becomes a completely negative character till the death of Kundan.
Every character has his life ,emotions ,conflicts  and on this basis the story moves forward.

14. Casting is 90 % of direction --Alfred Hitchcock
Dhanush as Kundan  ..Sonam kapoor as Zoya ..Abhay deol as Akram ---- are apt for the characters...

15.Songs :
There are no routine songs. Every song has lots of scenes ,events that will give the better impact than group dances and dream sequences. Almost  screen time of 45 minutes is taken by the songs.
For establishing love, relationship ,sad feelings all are expressed in the songs ..
Director utilized the songs in the best way. So that "Raanjhanaa" is a peculiar movie and is not in the run of the mill movie list...
A.  R. Rahman’s music is the soul for the film.
Editor has done tremendous work. He manages lot of footage and is presented in the best way.

16.In a love story , The lovers are given the same amount of screen time.
One of the characters is usually given more screen time and more problems to deal with .
Kundan and Zoya characters have almost equal screen time  but main character kundan occupies more screen time in facing problems, so he won the audience’s heart.
