storyline Must  new for Hit 

If viewers are flocking cinema theatres on Friday, it might be because of their favourite hero or their other liking factor from the movie. But if the viewers are flocking cinema theaters on Monday, it speaks volumes about the story, screenplay, dialogues etc of the movie. 

If the storyline is new, there is scope that all the above features are new in the movie.

If the storyline is new----------->creative scenes/story runs can be written.

If creative scenes and story runs are there in the movie-----------> we get repeated audience.

For example :

What is the reason for the critical and commercial success of 3 Idiots? Reason is new storyline, new scenes and creative screenplay.

What is the reason for the critical and commercial success of

Bhaag MilkhaBhaag?

 Reason is new storyline and engaging screenplay.

What is the reason for the commercial success of Chennai express?

 Reason is New scenes, beautiful music, different screenplay.

There are many more examples such as Gajini, PK, Rang de Basanti, Lagaan,

Chak De India, Ready, Wanted, Jolly LLB, Queen, A wednesday which relied on scene structures and story lines.

Viewer should never think that he had seen this somewhere. If he felt that deja vu feeling, there would be no repeated audience.

About Scene Structure -1

As there is structure for a movie, there is a structure for a scene too. There are three parts to a scene.

1. Beginning (Hook)

2. Middle(Development)

3. End (Climax)

If these three are written perfectly, there is every chance that the scene is remembered for generations to come. It is important that Hook and Development scenes are written perfectly as they decide the scene run.

For example, 3 Idiots starting scene

Beginning( Hook) :

Madhavan is in a flight at Delhi Airport. He gets a phone call. He acts that he has chest pains and makes the flight stop before take off.

Middle(Development) :

Airport personnel want to take Madhavan to a nearby hospital. 

But Madhavan gets up immediately, says he is ok now and runs from there.

End( Climax) : 

Madhavan comes out from airport and rides a car. 

He calls his friend, Raju and the beginning of the next scene starts.

 It all runs in a flow without any missing links.

About Characters -1

Complementary Pairs

It is very essential to present two characters of a movie differently if they have parallel tracks or if their characters are interwoven and travel throughout the story. It is very important that those two characters behave differently. There should be subtle differences between the traits, characterization, age, make up, thinking and body language of those two characters.

For example : Company, Satya, Dalapathi, Iruvar.

We can see the difference between two characters, Malik(Ajay Devgan) and Chandu(Vivek Oberoi), from the movie company.

                                            

Malik thinks before he reacts, whereas Chandu reacts before he thinks.

Malik's reacts coolly to take his decisions whereas Chandu reacts and takes his role too seriously. Malik is portrayed as a serious guy and Chandu is portrayed as a sensitive guy.

These are how two characters are different and behave differently.

Another example is how two characters in the movie Satya behave. Those two characters are BhikuMatre(ManojBajpai) and Satya(J.D.Chakravarthy)

BhikuMatre believes everyone where as satya believes none.

BhikuMatre doesn't think where as Satya thinks too much.

BhikuMatre is a Jovial guy whereas Satya is a serious guy.

Lot of care should be taken to present two characters differently if those two characters are the principal characters of the story.

About Scenes-1

  Every Scene you write must be an obvious situation.

Then every scene in that script would be wonderful. When we are unable to take away or delete any scene from a script as that scene would add to the plot, that script is adjudged as the best script. The main criterion to get a good script is how the situations are created that go along with the plot.

For example: Climax scene (Delivery Scene) in 3 Idiots

Rancho(Aamir Khan) is in final year of mechanical engineering. There should be a very hard situation that tests the ability of an engineering student, a hard situation that tests the genius and practical knowledge of a person. That is why, an engineering student, Rancho gets a hard situation in the form of a delivery case.

Priya (Kareena Kapoor) is a medical student. If she could come to the campus, she would do the delivery. That is the reason Priya is at the hospital on that day instead of staying in the campus. There are huge rains and floods that come suddenly, so it becomes impossible for the staff to shift Professor's daughter to hospital. So, the delivery is planned at the campus as it is raining cats and dogs.

As they have no other option, Rancho and team starts handling the situation in whatever options they have. First they see that they get power in the make shift labour room. Next, they see that they connect to internet to video chat with Priya. They use their technical knowledge and use Vacuum Cleaner for suction during delivery.

Before the labour room scene starts, Professor sahasrabuddi(BomanIrani) hits Rancho. From this scene, there should be a drastic change in Professor's character that he agrees that Rancho is the best student. That scene would be the birth of his grandson. The way Rancho handled the situation made Professor realize that the quick and logical decisions taken by Rancho are the only reason that his daughter and grandson are alive. The moment he holds his grandson in his hands, that entire monster ego is gone. He immediately presents his Pen to Rancho.

 

This scene was successful because of the situations created by the writer. If one can realise, we cannot find Chatur (Omi Vaidya) in this scene because he would also have changed his heart regarding Rancho and there is no story without that character. That is the reason Chatur is not present in that scene.
